3. Tape is continuing to innovate

The first tape reel could store 1.4 MB of data.  But with LTO-4 Ultrium, end users can now store 800 GB (native) on a single cartridge. In 55 years, the capacity of uncompressed tape has increased by 571,426 times.

On 22nd May 2006, two intrepid HP Ultrium and HP DAT 160 data cartridges were carried to the summit of Mount Everest by British climbers, Tom and Ben Clowes.

The tapes contained data that had been recorded at sea level prior to being tested to extremes on the world’s highest mountain. On their safe return to HP’s media laboratories, all their precious contents could be restored normally.
